Ideals

We have been passing through the formative period of the organization and now we have come to the period of constructive planning and activity. We must know what we are, and the things for which we stand in order that our activity may rightly contribute to the upholding of character and of a high-grade citizenship. The time has now come when the world will know the Invisible Empire in its true character. Before we can correctly interpret this Order and the things for which it stands we ourselves must know ourselves and the principles and ideals of this Order.

And here it is necessary to repeat briefly some things with which you are already familiar. 

- THE CHARACTER OF THE ORGANIZATION

          This is a White Pride organization, exalting the Caucasian Race and teaching the doctrine of white pride. This does not mean that we are enemies of the colored and mongrel races. But it does mean that we are organized to establish the solidarity and to realize the mission of the White Race. All of Christian Civilization depends upon the preservation and up-building of the White Race, and it is the mission of the Invisible Empire to proclaim this doctrine until the White Race shall come into its own.
          This is a Gentile organization, and as such has as its mission the interpretation of the highest ideals of the White, Gentile peoples. We sing no hymns of hate against the Judah. He is interested in his own things and we are exercising the same privilege of banding our own kind together in order that we may realize the highest and best possible for ourselves.

 

 

- RACIAL IDEALS

          We stand for white pride. Distinction among the races is not accidental but designed. This clearly brought out in the one book that tells authoritatively of the origin of the races. This distinction is not incidental, but is of the vastest importance and indicates the wisdom of the divine mind. It is not temporary but is as abiding as the ages that have not yet ceased to roll. The Pride of the White Race must be maintained or be overwhelmed by the rising tide of color.

          We must keep this a free country. Only by doing this can we be faithful to the foundations laid by our forefathers.

 

- CITIZENSHIP IDEALS

          Development of the highest standard of citizenship. We ourselves must come to know what it means to be citizens of the foremost nation on all the earth. We need to have knowledge of the privilege and responsibilities and glories of our citizenship. And we need to be under the necessity of exercising our citizenship intelligently. We must learn and practice these things in order that we may teach them to others.
          Rightful use of the ballot. Thank God, the day of partisan politics is past. Time was when parties stood for great principles. But today the difference between them is that of “tweedledum and tweedledee.” One of the parties must be induced to champion great fundamental American principles that will hasten the development of our country; or else a new party must come into being. As the matter now stands we must cast our ballots for the right as it is most nearly represented and championed by men regardless of party.
          We stand for the enforcement of law by the regularly constituted authorities. This order does not take the law into its own hands and will not tolerate acts of lawlessness on the part of its members. Any person of any color or creed who charges the Invisible Empire with being an organization which fosters and perpetrates acts of lawlessness and deeds of violence is either willfully blind or is a malicious, slandering, lying fool who, because of some inborn prejudice, seeks to destroy an organization that is law-abiding, and that demands the enforcement of laws by those who have been duly elected to office. We are within our rights as American citizens when we demand of men who are put in offices of trust that they shall faithfully perform the duties of their offices. It is quite evident that those who oppose us on this principle do not want the laws of our country enforced, and are seeking to cover their anarchistic spirit by impugning our motives and imputing criminality to us.

 

- PATRIOTIC IDEALS

          The men and women of this Order stand for the purest and most practical type of patriotism toward our great and glorious country.
          We take our stand upon the Declaration of Independence as the basis of popular government. This Document denies the dogma of despots, that king’s rule by divine right. It asserts that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. It solemnly affirms the right of the American people to govern themselves as a free and independent nation… independent of all outside sovereignty and control.
          We believe in upholding the Constitution of the United States. This Document reduces to practice the precepts of the Declaration and must be recognized as the supreme law of the land. It guarantees that liberty which must be cherished as the precious heritage of the American people. It establishes the freedom of the institutions dear to the American heart. It guarantees Religious liberty, freedom of speech and of press, and all the rights that pertain to the people who constitute this nation. It depicts ideals and defines institutions that must be made real and kept secure. The Invisible Empire is sworn by a solemn oath to uphold and defend this immortal Constitution.
          We teach that the citizen’s first and highest allegiance is to the Government of the United States. No other government, potentate, or person of any kind shall share in this allegiance. We maintain that a divided allegiance means no allegiance. There can be no half-American, and any sort of hyphen absolutely makes impossible any kind of loyalty to the American government, its ideals and institutions.
          We stand for the American Flag against enemies without and within. We emphasize devotion to the flag of our country as the ensign of our American Nationality and the emblem of our National honor. A man stands wholly for the Stars and Stripes or else to him his country’s flag is only a dirty rag. We insist that no flag shall fly above our flag, and that no flag shall float by its side.

          Neither domestic traitors nor foreign foes of any kind shall be permitted to destroy this nation.
          None shall be allowed to circumscribe the influence and hinder the progress of American institutions on this Continent. And this involves the welfare and development of the public school system. To those who seek to undermine or destroy this American institution we say, “hands off,” and we will defend this institution against every enemy, whether it be political or ecclesiastical.
          The Invisible Empire stands for law and order, freedom of speech, freedom of the press and freedom of conscience, for the free public school, separation of church and state. White Pride and Christianity. It is the sworn duty of a Klansman to uphold the law and assist the regularly constituted authorities, at all times, in the discharge of their legal duties. “To protect the home, the chastity of womanhood, and to exemplify a pure patriotism toward our glorious country.”
          Klansmen are opposed to all manners of mobs, and to mob violence in every form and the destruction of public and private property without due process of law. Klansmen contend that all disputes between citizens, which cannot be adjusted by the parties directly interested, should be and must be settled though the regular established courts of the country.
          Klansmen are opposed to Bolshevism, Sovietism, Anarchism, Communism, and every other “ism” or cult that has for its object the overthrow of the Government of the United States. Klansmen do not believe that any man or woman who opposes the government has any right to protection under the government, and should be deported or placed behind prison bars.
          Klansmen are sworn to practice Klannishness towards Klansmen, not only in their commercial, material and social relations, but in their moral and spiritual relations as well.
          The Invisible Empire has no fight to make upon the Negro. He is recognized and the Klansmen are sworn to protect him, his rights and property and assist him in the elevation of his moral and spiritual being and in the preservation of the purity of his race.
          The Invisible Empire has no fight to make upon any man because of his race, place of birth, religion or political affiliations.
          The Constitution of the United States guarantees to every man the right to worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience and the Invisible Empire stands eternally upon the Constitution.
          The Invisible Empire does not attempt to regulate the private morals, family affairs, and political or religious beliefs of any man.
          The being a true statement of the principles and purposes of the Invisible Empire, the question naturally arises: Why this relentless war now being waged upon the Order?

          It does not require the wisdom of a sage or the reasoning power of a philosopher to answer the question.
          One great “bug-a-boo” put forth by the enemies of the Invisible Empire is the mask. They vehemently tell us “there is no objection to the Invisible Empire if you discard the mask.” This is the biggest subterfuge ever put forth by a hypocrite to mislead an honest man. It is not the mask that worries the enemies of the Order, but the fact that the identity of the Klansman is concealed. The crook cannot locate him. The vicious cannot keep their eye upon him. Therefore, when they wish to sally forth upon an errand of questionable enjoyment, their pleasure is marred by the thought of a Klansman on their trail. The invisible presence of a Klansman is their nightmare… not the mask.
          The use of the mask, except within the lodge room, at public naturalizations or in public parades or by special permission, is strictly forbidden by the rules of the Order.
          Our first and most important duty is to correct the impression made common by a subsidized press… that the Invisible Empire is a mob organization. We can do this only by living in our daily lives, the principles set forth in the twelfth chapter of Romans. We must show, by word and deed, that Klansmen are not only a one hundred percent American, but are honest law-abiding Christians.
          We must realize that the safety, peace and dignity of this country depend upon you and we cannot shirk our individual duties, either as Klansmen, citizens or members of the Christian church. We must wake up to the fact the under this republican form of government, every right and privilege carries with it a duty and that no one hundred percent American can shirk that duty and be a good Klansman, a good citizen or a consistent Christian.
          No self-respecting man can any longer be neutral. If you believe in the preservation of American ideals, the enforcement of law, the pride of the white race, the separation of church and state, the perpetuation of the free public schools, and the Christian religion, join with the Invisible Empire. Otherwise, line up with crooks lawbreakers, moral reprobates, non-Christians and those who do not owe their first allegiance to the United States.
          Patriotism and Christianity are preeminently the moving principles of the Invisible Empire. The flag, the constitution and the Holy Bible are the keystone of the Order's principles.
          The object of the Invisible Empire is NOT to violate the law but to uphold the law… NOT to oppress or persecute mankind, but to uplift mankind; NOT to create strife or racial prejudice among man, but to cultivate brotherly kindness among men; NOT to crush the downtrodden, but to protect the weak, assist the needy and preserve the ideals the ideals and government of the United States.
          The preservation of American ideals and the Christian religion depends upon the early creation in the children of this nation of a reverence for and an undying faith in God’s Holy Word. That this reverence and faith may be indelibly stamped upon the minds of the children, the Bible must be read and explained to them daily, during their early years.
          The Invisible Empire believes that the free public schools should be the vehicle for this Bible reading and instruction, and that no atheist, infidel, skeptic, or non-believer should be allowed to teach in the public schools. The Invisible Empire does not contend for sectarian instruction in the Bible, but asks that it be read and explained from the broad viewpoint of its divine origin and inspiration.

 

“God give us men, sun crowned and strong, with their heads above the fog.” Gives us men whose hearts beat true to the principles of personal decency and whose souls are filled with the love of Jesus Christ. Remove from our makeup, the bane of human selfishness and broaden our usefulness to God and man.

Jesus Christ is the Klansman’s criterion of character and to Him we look for light, love and life.
